Delivered to its first owner in 1967, the cabriolet remained in the USA until the early 2000s. A German businessman and Mercedes enthusiast acquired this "rough diamond" to create something truly special: the car was dismantled down to the bare shell and completely rebuilt. Not only that, but the iconic 8-cylinder engine from the 500SE of the W126 series was installed and the matching transmission was tuned accordingly.
The longer rear axle of the most powerful sedan model, the 300 SEL 6.3, complemented the power package and performs its work with such harmony that even seasoned professionals are left in awe.
With only 954 units built at the factory, this original high-cooler cabriolet presents itself in top form – with a thoroughly successful conversion that even die-hard originality lovers will find captivating.
This approach is not new – companies like Mechatronik and other manufacturers have focused on this topic for several years, and not without reason, they have full order books and multi-year waiting lists.
It should be noted that these restored and technically significantly enhanced examples now cost at least €500,000 (a non-binding but very cautious estimate! We suspect much more).
The question from laypeople is how such amounts are generated, and the answer is quite simple: laypeople can hardly imagine how many hours of invaluable work go into such a vehicle until it can be delivered at the level of a new car.
The rest is covered by the astronomically high prices for the base, the necessary spare parts, chrome trim, and much more. Anyone who ends up with a practically new car after such a build and follows what happens during the process with keen eyes might almost be tempted to call it a special offer…
Back to our offered unique piece:
Green is no longer the color we knew and despised on our grandfathers’ cars. Instead, it is the in-tone of today.
Nowadays, it is almost normal to see a brand-new Porsche or Ferrari shining in the latest mix of oak green or British Green, perhaps even more often than in the usual Rosso Corsa or Enzian blue.
This is certainly also due to social media and the rise of accounts like "Green Over Tan," where a long-unloved color combination is now celebrated.
Back in the 1970s, long before Instagram or even the internet, choosing an emerald tone was a decision of true enthusiasts.
In our case, we would have loved to meet the person who chose this color instead of the more common astral silver.
At least our eyes are practically glued to this boulevard cruiser! It belongs to the W111 series, also called "large tail fin." It is painted in one of Mercedes-Benz’s most beautiful shades, dark olive green, which shifts between almost black and bright green.
The elongated lines of the cabriolet look better and better with age, especially when painted in this non-metallic tone that comes into its own in sunlight. Luxurious chrome accents further highlight the subtle sophistication of the bodywork. The interior is equally inviting, especially when the brown fabric roof is folded back so that the cognac-colored interior, perfectly matching the green body, can catch the daylight at every opportunity.
Once seated in the sprung, armchair-like seats, you are greeted by a symphony of walnut wood and leather, elegantly winding around chrome switches and the modern "pinstripe" Becker stereo system in the style of the era with Bluetooth and satellite navigation.
This is a car that leaves nothing to be desired when it comes to experiencing the joys of open-road driving. Whether you are lucky enough to be behind the wheel or as a passenger – gliding in this Benz is something you will probably never forget. The reason is simple – it has a final trump card in its sleeve – with the powerful V8 engine, this dream cabriolet is so confidently powered and perfectly tuned with all essential components that after just a few meters, the thought inevitably comes to mind:
This could very well have been the top model of the series from the factory back then. Mercedes itself could not have done it better.
Of course, all modifications are TÜV-approved with H-registration!
We look forward to welcoming serious interested parties, to whom we will gladly demonstrate this magnificent automobile, and kindly ask for a timely appointment.
With our best regards
