Vehicle description (by seller)

Messerschmitt FMR 500 Tiger

Born in 1959 amidst the German economic miracle years: first registered in January 1959. The extraordinary shape and the acceptable performance for the small engine size earned the Messerschmitt cabin roller a dedicated fan base. The FMR 500 was only produced for 3 years: from 1958 to 1961.

In connection with government aircraft contracts, Willy Messerschmitt had to cease vehicle manufacturing in mid-1956, although he had previously declared: "It has always been my firm intention to develop vehicles alongside aircraft manufacturing. The Regensburg plant was exclusively set up for vehicle production and will remain dedicated to this in the future." (Special supplement "Messerschmitt" to the 8-Uhr-Blatt) From January 15, 1957, the cabin rollers were further produced by the newly founded Fahrzeug- und Maschinenbau Regensburg GmbH (FMR). The company's shareholders were designer Fritz M. Fend and manufacturer Valentin Knott.

From 1958 to 1961, alongside the KR 200, the four-wheeled "FMR Tg 500" was also manufactured, which was presented as the "Tiger." However, this name was not allowed to be used because various animal names such as "Tiger," "Mustang," etc., were protected for Krupp truck series (the name "Messerschmitt" could no longer appear in the type designation). Therefore, the vehicle was marketed as FMR Tg 500. Nevertheless, the Tg 500 was commonly called "Tiger."

As a sporty variant of the cabin roller, the Tg 500 offered impressive performance. Powered by a 494 cc two-cylinder two-stroke engine from Fichtel & Sachs with 19.9 PS, it reached speeds of up to 130 km/h (a Porsche 356 with a 1300 cc engine from 1957 was only 145 km/h).insignificantly faster). The selling price of 3650 DM (1958–1960) or 3725 DM (1961) was quite high, so only a few units were built; according to the Messerschmitt Club Germany, only a maximum of 300 units were produced.
