The most desirable version of Mercedes iconic W113 Pagoda Top series !
The Mercedes-Benz W113 line was introduced at the 1963 Geneva Motor Show to replace the 300 SL & 190 SL. 48,912 were produced from 1963 through 1971, 19,440 were sold in the US. They were developed under the auspices of Mercedes-Benz Technical Director Fritz Nallinger, Chief Engineer Rudolf Uhlenhaut and Head of Styling Friedrich Geiger. Lead designers were Paul Bracq and Béla Barényi, who created its patented, slightly concave hardtop, which inspired the „Pagoda“ nickname. All models were equipped with a fuel-injected inline-six cylinder engine. Hood, deck lid, door skins and tonneau cover were made of aluminum to reduce weight. A comparatively short and wide chassis, combined with an excellent suspension, powerful brakes and radial tires gave the W113 superb handling for its time. Styling in front, with its characteristic upright Bosch „fishbowl“ headlights and simple chrome grille, dominated by the large three-pointed star in the nose panel, paid homage to the 300 SL roadster. W113 SLs were typically configured as a „Coupe/Roadster“ with a soft-top and a removable hardtop. The 280SL was introduced in December 1967 and continued in production through 23 February 1971, when the W113 was replaced by its successor, the entirely new and substantially heavier R107. Over the years, the W113 evolved from a sports car into a comfortable grand tourer and US models were usually equipped with the 4-speed automatic transmission and air conditioning. Manual transmission models came with the standard 4-speed or the optional ZF 5-speed. The main change was an upgrade to the (2.8 L) M130 engine with 170hp maximum power and 180 lbft maximum torque, which finally gave the W113 adequate power. Each engine was now bench-tested for two hours prior to being fitted, so their power specification was guaranteed at last. By the time the 280SL gave way to the next generation SL, designated the R107, it had firmly established itself as one of the finest cars to come from the Stuttgart firm. With timeless, graceful styling, spirited performance and handling, and build quality and reliability second to none, the SL series of cars built from 1963 to 1971 are solid collectibles with plenty to offer.
On December 12th, 1969 Mrs. Rachel Koury visited John H. Butts Motors in Santa Barbara CA to trade in her 67 Mercedes 230SL and upgrade
to a brand-new 1970 Model 280SL with automatic and power steering. The new vehicle was partially financed by Santa Barbara National Bank.
For reason unbeknownst to us, the automobile was immediately passed on to Mrs. Shirley Greening who owned it until she could no longer safely operate her little jewel.
Original Bill of Sale, Window Sticker and finance papers are present, as well as the Data Card, Service Book, Owners- & Parts Manual, etc.
Mrs. Greening had moved to Arizona at that point and passed the Mercedes on to her son. He took possession on paper for legal reasons
and sold it to the next owner in 2005. Essentially it is a 2 owner vehicle.
To this day the car looks wonderful going down the road with either top up or top down.
It displays timeless elegance and understated colors Light Beige (181) & Black (040) & black MB Tex (131) interior.
Automatic transmission and power steering make this 280SL a great pleasure to drive and it attracts admiration, rather than envy.
The paint is nice, chrome is excellent, glass is good, cloth convertible top is in good condition, the interior is in good condition and it is mechanically sound.
Even the spare tire w. cover, floor jack, wheel chuck and tool kit are still present.
This Pagoda Top Mercedes was used in California, as well as in South Dakota and in Arizona.
It was always repaired and maintained as needed, down to several repairs on the Kienzle clock.
Comes with a stack of repair invoices to the vehicle since new and it is currently in excellent running condition.
The odometer shows 07130 miles at this time, the clear AZ Title shows Box B (exceeds mechanical limits).
In 2012, only 330 miles ago, the engine was rebuilt by Metric Motors in CA, then installed and dialed in by M.B. Motors in Phoenix AZ.
It was the owners running, driving, pride and joy before a Pagoda Top Mercedes became a collectible or an investment.
Whatever work she deemed important was done. Including body work in the late 70’s and mid 80’s to maintain the appearance.
The car is solid, with straight lines, good panel fit & good gaps.
A great running, excellent driving, beautiful looking automobile at almost 1/2 the price of a perfect example.
The smiles per mile will easily outweigh the money spent.
