While luxury yachts used to be mere status symbols, today they mean much more to many millionaires. A retreat from business hustle and the freedom of the open sea are the most common reasons to acquire such a yacht. They measure up to around 60 meters and offer ample space for glittering on-board parties or sunbathing and relaxing—without sacrificing familiar comfort and luxury. Luxurious living areas with every imaginable amenity, bars, and even swimming pools can be found on deck. The upscale fittings leave nothing to be desired.
Originally, yachts measuring 60–100 meters were called mega or superyachts, and anything above that gigayachts. In practice, the terminology never really took hold; all luxury yachts from 60 meters are commonly called mega or superyachts. Only a few shipyards worldwide dare to design and develop such projects. These impressive vessels are built to the wishes of their billionaire owners. Helipads, submarine garages, full spa areas, pools, and private cinemas are not uncommon. Steering one of these extravagant ships requires a highly trained crew. One of the most famous examples is the Dubai yacht owned by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Ruler of Dubai.
There are many ways to travel the world’s oceans and enjoy the dream of freedom. You can call at the most famous marinas in the world—head to Puerto Banús Marina in Marbella or take in the striking skyline at Dubai Marina. Among the most exclusive yachting havens are also Port Grimaud in Saint-Tropez and Marina Ibiza.
All these possibilities open up with your own luxury yacht. The fundamental difference lies in propulsion: sailing yachts versus motor yachts. In the luxury segment there are sailing yachts—such as the Custom Aluminum Sailing Yacht CORTO MALTESE at almost 38 meters—and even among megayachts, sailing vessels can be built on request. Motor yachts offer a far broader selection, yet the trend is the same across models: clean design and comfortable interiors. High-quality materials such as chrome, gold, and leather are used.
Most recently, after years of planning, the megayacht Solaris was delivered by Lloyd Werft in Bremerhaven to its owner Abramovich. The yacht costs about €500 billion. Only a handful of shipyards develop superyachts over many years exactly to their clients’ wishes—those of monarchs, sheikhs, or Russian oligarchs—down to the smallest detail. Another renowned luxury yard is Pride; one of its most famous projects is Pride Mega Yachts ILLUSION PLUS. Other well-known builders of exclusive vessels include Benetti, Custom, Sanlorenzo, Alarnia, Lürssen, and Sunseeker.
