Model history

Over 20 million Beetles were produced by Volkswagen. But at the end of the 1960s, a "wind of change" was blowing through the Volkswagen factory. The new era was ushered in with water-cooled, front-mounted inline engines with front-wheel drive. Similar to Maserati, "Winds" served as the namesake. The new models were originally supposed to be called Scirocco, Passat, and Blizzard. Blizzard was quickly dropped because a ski company secured the rights to the name, and thus the model "Golf" was born. The designer and Italdesign chief Giorgio Giugiaro was commissioned to design, among other things, the Scirocco. He drew a coupe design in an exciting wedge shape. In March 1973, the successor to the Karmann Ghia was presented at the Geneva Motor Show. The initial engine options were a 1.1-liter with 50PS and a 1.5-liter with 70 or 85 PS. The hot desert wind Scirocco was just a gentle breeze for tuner Oettinger. By 1975, an Oettinger engine with about 100 PS and a mechanical Pierburg-CL injection system was ready. Although it never went into series production, it was further developed and later used successfully in motorsport. By 1976, a modified 1.8-liter engine with 125 PS and K-Jetronic injection was already in use. The magazine "Sport Auto" praised this version as the best four-cylinder in the world at the time. But that was not enough for the Oettinger company. In a further step, the displacement was increased to 2.0 liters in 1980. Inspired by the Cosworth unit from Formula 1, the first 1.6-liter 16V engine from Oettinger officially delivered and achieved a very dynamic 136 HP. In 1985, Oettinger's basic design was installed by VW in the Scirocco II as a 1.8-liter engine. At that time, Oettinger was already working on completing the 2.0-liter engine with 170 HP. Oettinger has always been closely associated with VW as a tuner and celebrated notable successes in motorsport, especially with the Scirocco. The basic version of the Scirocco I is characterized by its clean lines and, above all, its low weight of only 800 kg. Auto Motor und Sport described the Scirocco as one of the best-driving cars available in 1974. History of the VW Oettinger - Scirocco Delivered in 1979 in Bornheim, this Scirocco immediately came into the hands of the Belgian VW Motorsport chief at the request of the first owner and was converted into an Oettinger Scirocco in collaboration with Oettinger. All performance levels and improvements developed by Oettinger were installed in this Scirocco up until the 1990s. Originally equipped as a 16V Oettinger with 136 HP, today the top engine from the premium tuner’s house is a 2.0-liter with nearly 200 HP. A 5-speed racing gearbox, Gleitstein lock, factory suspension from Fichtl & Sachs, and internally ventilated disc brakes make the heart of any motorsport enthusiast race faster. This Scirocco is simply a rocket and will hardly find a comparable contemporary opponent on today’s roads. What makes this vehicle special is that all modifications have been documented from day one. Every invoice is available. The first owner invested incredible sums in modifying his beloved desert wind. The originalService booklet available. This vehicle, with its original 47,570 KM, is still mostly in its original paint. Changes have also been recorded. In fact, every modification and every trip with this extraordinary vehicle has been documented from day 1. An incredible history that we have not seen before with a classic vehicle. Technically and visually, the VW Scirocco still presents itself in very well-maintained condition today. This car spent its entire life in the owner's family until it was transferred to an important collection in 2012, where it was never registered. It currently has German registration papers. We are selling this unique Oettinger on behalf of the customer on consignment.
