Introducing S/V Kanthaka, a unique, fully insulated 1998 Alubat Ovni 43. These vessels were designed by Philippe Briand and built by Alubat, based in Les Sables D’Olonne, France. Known for their pioneering use of aluminum, Alubat is celebrated for producing approximately 50 high-quality cruising yachts annually, each one crafted entirely from aluminum. This ensures not only durability but also versatility, as demonstrated by the Ovni 43's lifting keel and rudder, allowing it to navigate shallow waters and be easily beached. Many of these robust blue water cruisers continue to sail the world's oceans today.
S/V Kanthaka underwent a comprehensive refit in 2024 in Barcelona preparing her for a circumnavigation. After crossing the Atlantic this past winter, she arrived in Rio Dulce Guatemala. She is presently waiting on the hard for a new owner, covered with a full protective storage tarp.
On the interior the Alubat Ovni 43 has utilized every bit of space, giving her full length at the waterline. The interior has stunning woodwork throughout and beautiful teak and holly floors. She is a 3-cabin version with the master cabin having a double and a single bed, followed by a head in the front V berth and storage locker under the anchor windlass. There are twin cabins aft, portside with a wide double bed, starboard side with a double and a single above. There are two heads with marine toilets. The galley is the "famous" "L" design original to the OVNI 43. The galley is equipped with a 2-burner propane stove with oven, double sinks and refrigeration and an air fryer electric stove. There is also a 16-gallon water maker and a new JABSCO water pump installed. The galley, salon and forward cabins have large opening hatches for plenty of ventilation, fans in Saloon and 2 cabins with LED lighting throughout.
S/V Kanthaka is powered by a reliable Volvo MD22 L 55hp original diesel engine with 8400hrs, which has been meticulously maintained. During the 2024 refit, mechanics advised against replacing it due to its exceptional performance and longevity, opting instead for a full mechanical revision, including revised injectors, a new electrical board and key, and a new gearbox. The sail inventory is well-equipped for various conditions, featuring a mainsail with stack pack. Both the Yankee head-sail and the fore-stay come with roller furling systems, and there are additional sails for more challenging weather, such as a stay-sail and a storm jib. The 2024 refit also saw a complete overhaul of the standing rigging, upgraded with top-tier racing BSI quality materials, Dyneema halyards, and roller lines for the running rigging. New head-sail sheets, boom and reef lines, and a vang were also added.
In addition to these mechanical and sail enhancements, S/V Kanthaka boasts a suite of modern electrical and navigation updates. The mast features new navigation and floodlights, and the latest 2024 navigation equipment has been installed, including a Vulcan Chart plotter, Halo Radar, AIS active responder, and a Raymarine autopilot. Moreover, a new Starlink system has been integrated, providing reliable connectivity even in remote locations.
This vessel has all you need to stay offshore for long periods. She carries 158 gallons of water in 2 tanks and 100 gallons of fuel in 3 tanks. She was outfitted with: 900 watts of solar (2 x 450w panels), Victron charge controller, 2000w Pure Sine Inverter. Also new is a 1500W windlass and a 33kg Vulcan anchor. To help you get to shore there is a dinghy and 2 outboard motors (10hp and 3.5hp).
S/V Kanthaka is fully prepared with all the necessary spare parts, tools and safety equipment. There is a brand new off shore life raft, EPIRB beacon, harnesses, and more. Also included is a spare new dodger and bimini. In 2020 the deck paint was redone and still looks nearly new!
S/V Kanthaka represents a rare opportunity to own a fully equipped blue-water cruiser, perfect for live-aboard lifestyles. She is ready to embark on new adventures. Whether you dream of crossing oceans or exploring secluded bays, this versatile and robust vessel is ready to make those dreams a reality!
