Düsseldorf is the capital of North Rhine-Westphalia and the seat of the Düsseldorf administrative district. The district-free city on the Rhine is the second-largest city in the state after Cologne, with approximately 617,000 inhabitants. In Germany, Düsseldorf is the seventh-largest city by population. Düsseldorf is part of the Rhine-Ruhr metropolitan region with around ten million inhabitants and the Rhineland metropolitan region with 8.6 million inhabitants. In 1288, the place at theConfluence of the Düssel River into the Rhine, the city rights. From the end of the 14th century until the beginning of the 19th century, the city was the seat of government for territories of the Holy Roman Empire and the Confederation of the Rhine: the Duchy of Berg, the Duchies of Jülich-Berg and Jülich-Kleve-Berg, as well as the Grand Duchy of Berg, and from 1690 to 1716, also the residence of Elector Palatine Johann Wilhelm of the Palatinate. From the 19th to the 20th century, it was the parliamentary seat of the Rhine Province of the Kingdom of Prussia.
During the German Empire, Düsseldorf developed into the "office of the Ruhr area" amid the rapid industrialization in Germany and became a large city after surpassing the 100,000-inhabitant mark in 1882.
The Rhine metropolis is one of the five most important, internationally interconnected economic centers in Germany. Düsseldorf is a trade fair city and the seat of many publicly traded companies, including the DAX-listed conglomerate Henkel. It is also the most revenue-generating German location for auditing, corporate and legal consulting, advertising, and fashion, as well as an important banking and stock exchange hub. It is also a leader in the art trade in Germany.
Düsseldorf has several Rhine ports. Its Düsseldorf Airport is the intercontinental hub of North Rhine-Westphalia. The city is also home to 22 universities, including the renowned Düsseldorf Art Academy and Heinrich Heine University. Düsseldorf is also internationally known for its Old Town ("longest bar in the world"), its shopping boulevard Königsallee ("Kö"), its Düsseldorf Carnival, the football club Fortuna Düsseldorf, and the ice hockey club Düsseldorfer EG. Other attractions include numerous museums andGaleries as well as the Rhine promenade and the modern Medienhafen. The cityscape is also characterized by numerous high-rise buildings and church towers, the 240-meter-high Rhine Tower, many historical monuments, and seven Rhine bridges. Notably, there is a large number of East Asian residents, including the Japanese community, which forms the largest Japanese community in Germany. In a comparison of the quality of life among 231 major cities worldwide, Düsseldorf ranks sixth.
