J/Boats and J/Composites proudly present the New J/40, an offshore-capable, high-performance cruising yacht designed for double-digit speeds and exceptional comfort. This 40-footer is engineered to excel in performance, versatility, and cruising comfort.

A Design that Defies Categorization

The joy of sailing and the thrill of steering a well-balanced, stable, high-performing sailboat are integral to the J/Boats DNA. The New J/40 transcends specific categories or rules, adhering only to the ultimate rule of the sea, rewarding boats with smooth motion that adapts to changing conditions with minimal crew effort. Like its predecessors, the New J/40 is designed to glide through waves, nearly steering itself. Its simple yet versatile, high-aspect sailplan allows for various sail combinations (mainsail only, jib only, reefed main with inner jib, etc.) for comfortable cruising, while also being optimized for signature events such as Rolex Fastnet, Newport-Bermuda, Transpac, and Chicago-Mac.

Easier Sailing means More Sailing Time

Family-friendly sailing has been a core principle of J/ since the launch of the first J/24 in 1976. The easier a boat is to sail, the more time one spends sailing. On the New J/40, all sail controls lead to the spacious cockpit, featuring six winches optimally placed for quick access to hoisting and trimming. The mainsail serves as the primary driving force of the sail plan, with all controls (mainsheet, backstay, and traveler) easily accessible to the driver. The non-overlapping small jib simplifies tacking, providing better visibility and requiring less jib sheet trimming compared to an overlapping genoa. For enhanced downwind performance, the New J/40 includes a fixed carbon bow sprit for flying an asymmetrical spinnaker or a furling Code sail.

More Sailing, Less Motoring

The New J/40 is engineered to sail effectively in conditions where most boats resort to motoring. In under 8 knots with a mainsail and Code sail, the J/40 can sail nearly at wind speed. When motoring, the sleek hull with faired appendages (keel and rudder) minimizes resistance, resulting in highly efficient fuel consumption. This efficiency translates to less fuel usage and reduced tankage requirements for the same range.

Spacious Comfortable Cockpit

Sailors spend the majority of their time in the cockpit, making it essential to get the details right. The cockpit serves as both the operations hub and the primary entertainment space. The New J/40 ensures 360-degree visibility from the helm (including over the cabintop), which is crucial for proper sailing and easier docking. The angled, radiused backrests provide comfort for socializing, while the wide, angled winch coamings facilitate high-side seating and easy movement during sailing maneuvers. The twin-wheel configuration enhances access for transom boarding, swimming, and overall cockpit living/playing space. In race mode, the twin wheels allow the driver to sit further outboard, enabling the crew to transition smoothly between the aft and forward cockpits for easier sail handling and navigation.

Light-filled Living Space

Inspired by the J/45, the interior design and styling of the New J/40 is crafted by Isabelle Racoupeau in collaboration with J/Composites. The interior features beautifully varnished, handcrafted natural wood (solid and veneer), with a focus on natural light, attractive sightlines, and a spacious feel. The standard layout includes 3 cabins and 1 head, maximizing sleeping accommodations for larger families or crews, and is ideal for high-side sleeping during offshore racing or rallying. Alternatively, the 2-cabin, 2-head layout maximizes cruising storage, perfect for family sailing and extended cruising with one or two couples.

Built Strong to Last Long

The J/Composites Shipyard, located in the Vendee region of France, is a leader in high-quality sandwich/infusion construction and was the first European builder to adopt resin infusion molding technology in the mid-90s. Their commitment to precise weight control on large composite parts is vital for achieving stability, durability, and performance. The New J/40 is the only 40-footer on the market with a fully infused hull, deck, structural grid, and main bulkhead. This custom-engineered structure provides exceptional hull stiffness and optimal strength-to-weight ratio, without compromising the comfort of the living spaces.
