Porsche 986 2.7 Boxster
In the mid-1990s, Porsche was deep in a sales crisis. Rescue came in the form of the new Boxster, a newly developed mid-engine roadster. Boxster is a portmanteau derived from the first syllable of Box and the second syllable of Roadster. Its design is a reinterpretation of the styling language of classic Porsche roadsters such as the Porsche icons
550 Spyder, 718 RS 60, and the first Porsche, the 356 No.1 Roadster (pre A).
The first Porsche Boxster (internal code 986) was introduced in 1996 with a water-cooled 2.5-liter six-cylinder engine producing 150 kW (204 PS) and is considered the successor to the classic Porsche 555 Spyder from the 1950s. It shared many components with the Porsche 911 (996), which was released a year later, initially attracting criticism from Porsche for the lack of differentiation. With an entry price of 76,500 DM (approximately 39,100 euros), it attracted new customers to the brand and marked the beginning of Porsche's boom years in the mid/late 1990s.
What set the Boxster apart from its competitors at its launch was its relatively spacious interior. Thanks to its mid-engine layout, it has a trunk at the front and rear. The standard electric soft top is stored in a compartment above the engine; it can only be opened and closed when the vehicle is stationary. Initially, there was criticism of the somewhat unconventional appearance of the light units, which quickly earned the nickname "Eggs" or "Spiegeleier-Lampen" but have since become cult objects.
In 1997, part of the Boxster production was outsourced to the Finnish company Valet Automotive.outsourced to Uusikaupunki. In the fiscal year 2000/2001
(January 31), a total of 28,457 Boxster and Boxster-S models
were produced in Uusikaupunki. The contract with Valmet initially ran
until 2004 and was then extended until 2008 with an option for an
expanded partnership until 2011. 109,213 first-generation Boxsters
were produced in Finland from 1997 to 2004.
The manufacturing locations of the vehicles can be recognized by the
chassis number: an U (Uusikaupunki) or S (Stuttgart-Zuffenhausen) before the following six-digit number indicates Finnish or German origin.
The sporty two-seater impressed not only with driving fun and image but also with quality. In the TÜV statistics, the sports car built since 1996 is among the best in its class.
Body and interior: The Boxster is a car for active drivers who also enjoy curvy roads. If you're looking for a comfortable touring car or a transport marvel, this is not the place.
There are two seats, a split trunk, and a compact
fabric roof that electrically disappears behind the two seats.
The passengers do not have an excessive amount of space, but after all, it is
also a sports car.
Engine: When it was launched in 1996, the Boxster had a 204-horsepower
2.5-liter boxer engine. Over the years, the displacement increased to
2.7 liters, and the power initially rose to 220 PS and 228 PS.
Quality: The TÜV issues a top rating to both generations of the Boxster.
There are hardly any defects recorded, apart from the rare engine problems
and a partially excessive steering play.new generation. When it comes to brakes, the chassis, the exhaust system, and the lighting, the entry-level Porsche outperforms the competition in quality by miles.
Conclusion:
The Boxster is a car for unadulterated driving pleasure. If you discover a well-maintained model, you can hardly go wrong. (The World)
