The 2003 Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 40, designed by Daniel Andrieu, sits comfortably at the sweet spot of production cruising yachts. Launched during a golden age for the French yard, the SO 40 successfully balances spirited sailing performance with high-volume, comfortable cruising accommodations, making it a persistent favourite on the brokerage market two decades later.
Design and Build Quality
The SO 40 features a clean, purposeful hull shape with a moderate beam carried well aft, contributing significantly to stability and interior volume. The construction follows standard GRP layup techniques for the era, with a solid hull below the waterline and a cored deck for stiffness and insulation. While not built like a heavy offshore racer, the structure is robust and designed for reliable coastal and medium-distance offshore cruising. Early owners often praised the quality of the teak joinery below, which gives the cabin a warm, inviting feel that rivals newer production boats.
Performance Under Sail
Jeanneau's commitment to sailing performance is evident in the SO 40. Equipped with a deep, bulbous keel and a fractional sloop rig, the boat performs admirably. It handles light airs better than many of its contemporaries, accelerating easily. When the wind picks up, the boat is stiff, well-mannered, and tracks well. The generous sail plan requires a reef relatively early in higher winds to maintain comfort and control, but the helm remains balanced and predictable. Cruising speeds typically range from 6 to 7 knots on a beam reach, making for swift passage times.
Deck, Cockpit, and Systems
The cockpit is a highlight—spacious, functional, and secure. The twin steering wheels provide excellent visibility and easy access to the transom bathing platform, a feature greatly appreciated in warm climates. All primary control lines are led back to the cockpit, ensuring easy short-handed sailing. The deck layout is simple and uncluttered, aided by the efficient placement of hardware. Engine access is excellent via the lifting companionway stairs and access panels in the aft cabins.
Below Deck Accommodations
This is the three-cabin version featuring two good-sized double aft cabins and a V-berth forward. The saloon is bright, well-ventilated, and spacious, featuring a U-shaped settee and a substantial fixed table that can comfortably seat six. The L-shaped galley is functional for cooking at sea, with ample counter space and storage.
